Confirmed football fans, the Glaswegian band are responsible for the perfect soundtrack to Zidane, a portrait of the French footballer by Scottish film director and Turner Prize winner Douglas Gordon with Philippe Parreno, which was the surprise hit at Cannes Film Festival... ZIDANE: A 21ST CENTURY PORTRAIT - A film by DOUGLAS GORDON & PHILIPPE PARRENO Official Selection - Shown Out Of Competition - Cannes Film Festival 2006 One of the most acclaimed films in the Cannes Film Festival, ZIDANE: A 21ST CENTURY PORTRAIT is Douglas Gordon's and Philippe Parreno's sensational cinematic portrait of the world famous French football hero Zinédine Zidane. Filmed during a Real Madrid match (versus Villareal on April 23, 2005) in the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, its 92-minute length equals the actual game, but contrary to traditional television broadcasts, it is not the ball which is the focal point of the action. Instead, 17 synchronised cameras (under the direction of ace cinematographer Darius Khondji) distributed around the entire stadium are directed solely on Zidane...... "Zidane is the best sports movie I have ever seen and a wonderful film that brilliantly marries up a daringly experimental style with a popular subject." Peter Bradshaw (The Guardian) "Sublime, the only film to lift me out of my seat and inject that buzz of discovery for which Cannes is so cherished. It's the greatest film about football ever made and one of the great films about sport" Gary Younge (The Observer) Philippe Parreno (the film's director) on choosing Mogwai for the soundtrack... “Mogwai produce sound clouds, the type of music that carries the promise of narration. The toughness of their music, tense rock with guitar interference, goes well with the film. They are real football fans, so they immediately understood our project and they gave it their all.“ Stuart Braithwaite on the soundtrack... “It was only when they showed us the film where they had used some of our music that we understood. It doesn't look like you are watching a game on Sky TV. It’s something really cinematic and beautiful. It worked with the music and it was interesting for us because even though our music has been used a lot for things; this is the first time we have specifically done something for a project.” The mesmerising soundtrack was specially written and recorded by Mogwai post the recording of their acclaimed Mr Beast album which also featured two songs used in Michael Mann's Miami Vice film. |
