Shy Child |
Shy Child are Nate Smith and Pete Cafarella, they met at University in the mid 1990’s playing in various Washington and New York –based bands.
Their set up is simple; Nate plays the drums Pete sings and plays the ‘keytar’. “ It’s good to have limitations,” says Pete.. ‘You’re forced to be more creative with what you’ve got, you either do it or you don’t.” As for Pete’s choice of instrument, a keyboard shaped like a guitar, he says, “It looks pretty lame to watch someone sit down and play keyboards. I wanted to move around on stage so I found this old piece-of-shit keytar and modified it so I could play with two hands. It’s a utilitarian choice, not an aesthetic one.”
Shy Child view the music making process as a series of happy accidents, twisting knobs and pushing buttons until something gloriously incongruous splurges out of the speakers. From such a regime of inspired anarchy and tightly-controlled chaos has emerged ‘Noise Won’t Stop’, a slippery sonic delight from start to finish. The Paul Epworth (Bloc Party / Futureheads) co-produced the single ‘Drop The Phone’ which sets the tone, with its rubbery synth-funk basslines, headlong rhythmic lurch and general atmosphere of frazzled mayhem it’s an album that any so-called ‘new rave’ band would kill to have made.
ShyChild’s recent stay in the UK has seen them play gigs at Glastonbury, share the stage with MUSE at Wembley Stadium and play musical chairs at The Royal Albert Hall as well as appear on our TV’s screens on shows including Transmissions, Later, The Culture Show and Fashion Rocks with Stella McCartney.
‘Like DFA 1979 produced by The Neptunes’ The Guardian
‘Brain bending cyber pop’ NME
‘An astonishing album of pure electronic spunk rock’ On Week To Live
‘They make your feet twitch, your head nod and ..make you throw up some shapes your body never knew existed.’ Dazed & Confused
Ultimately, no-one can be told what Shy Child is. You have to hear it for yourself. Take the green pill and see how deep the foxhole goes. |
